NOW: Try to remove paint stains while the paint is still wet, if at all possible. Scrape off excess paint with a spoon, brush, or dull knife. If it’s water-based paint, rinse the fabric right away in warm water. If it’s oil-based paint, blot the stain from the back with turpentine or the solvent that’s listed on the paint can as a paint thinner. (Spot-test a small hidden area of the fabric first.) For carpet, blot the stain with a wet paper towel or a mixture of one cup of lukewarm water and one teaspoon of dish detergent.

LATER: Soak the stain in a mixture of half dish detergent and half warm water. Rinse and repeat until the paint is gone or no longer coming off; apply stain remover if necessary and launder. For oil-based paints, soak the garment in soapy water overnight, rinse the garment, and launder as usual. For dried oil-based paint stains on carpet, use a steamer to soften the stain and try to break up the stain with a needle or pin.
